larryLarry the lobster…. This is a uncropped old school photography image, old school in that it was shot on film and the effects were all created manually on the set. Photoshop did not exist. Digital cameras did not exist. The fire is real, the image was exposed to include the flames. The pot lid is suspended by a pole pushed through the background.

The image was one of a series my studio had been hired to create for in store displays in a major retail department store chain. This image as you can imagine was for the cookware section.

When I found this series recently it took me back to the “old days”, my trade was much harder, required more individual talent and creativity, we had to “make” the shot on the set. Retouching was near impossible and extremely expensive. Now the world has gone topsy turvy— “just shoot it” then work it in Photoshop.  Those of us who learned to adapt are still around, those who didn’t no longer work in this field. Technology pushes us forward, sometimes though it takes it toll.

I began my photography career in high school, 39 years later it's still what defines me more than anything else. I've had other jobs and many hobbies but just never was able to stay away from behind the lens.
